Mary grew up in and around Cambridge and so chose to read Modern History at Oxford. She taught history at schools in Oxfordshire and Cambridge and was head of history at a leading independent school in Cambridge for 15 years, during which time she led numerous educational expeditions to castles, battlefields and historic houses.
Mary is a principal examiner for one of the examination boards, with 40 years’ experience, and she also examines for the International Baccalaureate. She lectures for the WEA and the U3A, with topics varying from “Mediaeval Women” to the Indian Mutiny.
By training and inclination a mediaevalist, as a teacher she specialised in the Tudor and Stuart periods and since retiring has developed interests in the 18th century and in women’s history.
Mary has published a textbook on Disraeli and several local history booklets and is currently working on the history of her parish church.
Mary has appeared on television as a contestant in Mastermind.
