Richard is former honorary foreign secretary of the Royal Geographical Society.
He worked for 25 years as senior lecturer at Sandhurst and has visited Ethiopia regularly since the mid 1960s.
As well as being a seasoned traveller, Richard has written a number of books, including The Blue Nile Revealed: The Story of the Great Abbai Expedition and, with John Blashford-Snell, East to the Amazon: In Search of the Great Paititi and The Trade Routes of the Ancients.
